How to Make Online Video Originals: Why You, George Lucas, & Chewy are the Same

Posted on: by Michael Tringe

New good ideas have something in common. They all start completely unknown, until they find a cult following, and then reach a much larger audience.

CreatorUp students have great ideas!

Mr. Lucas convinced people of his idea first in drawings and miniature, and filmed the miniatures to blow it up on the big screen for Star Wars. Start small, think big. What’s your idea, and how will you reach your audience on and offline? Whether you want to write your own sci-fi web series, create an event for your new food truck, make a video for your Kickstarter campaign, or launch a YouTube channel for your business – digital media is a free tool for you to use to get your idea off the ground.

Freddie Wong was able to write his way to 5 Million subscribers by creating niche content around a particular genre: sci-fi/action/comedy. An independent business owner like Sophia Amoruso was able to turn an eBay store that sells vintage finds into an online fashion retailer with nearly $100 million in annual sales. Our teachers can help give you a boost using video and the tools of digital media.

Dan Williams, the writer of Asylum now on Hulu, will cover writing the sci-fi web series or video campaign from concept to first draft – focusing on storytelling with a unique concept. Tune in to watch the livestream recording of Dan’s lab here:

And if you plan to launch a new business or Kickstarter campaign, how will you create the video or video strategy? In addition to learning the strategies for creating and marketing your original video content, it’s also important to learn how to effectively manage your time, energy, and resources so that your efforts pay off. If you see a topic that’s not covered that you’d like to learn in our next lab, just let us know in the comments! We’d love to hear from you and find a way to teach you what you’re most interested in learning with our amazing group of top teachers in the online video world.
